Week 1 - June 5-9th Grade 1 Age 7

Bold Bright Baron
Jack Baron, a Key West folk artist loved bold colors. His portraits are painted in unusual colors. Lets create a painting using bright colors and patterns.

Drawing In Sand
Create a relief sculpture. Make a drawing in wet sand. Press found objects into your art to add texture and pattern then cast your sculpture in plaster.

Buttercups, Butterflies and Baron
Create a sculpture garden that includes a whirligig, flowers and butterflies all out of recyclable materials. Learn about native flowers and butterflies as well.

Weaving With a Difference.
Create a unique woven hanging using felt as your loom. Explore color and shapes and finish your hanging with colored tin images

Week 2 - June 12-16th Grade 2 Age 7-8

Crawfish Jack and His Friends
Key West in the 1930’s lives on in the characters seen in folk artist Mario Sanchez’s work. Make a painting of a Sanchez character and use kitty litter, coffee grounds, tea leaves and cotton to add texture to your art.

Manungo’s Diablito Dancers
Create puppets dressed in carnival costumes of the 1930’s as depicted by Mario in his painting Manungo’s Diablito dancers.

Moving Objects
Create a kinetic sculpture. Use bendable wire, balls, beads, paint and found objects to create a movable sculpture. Dizzy dotted summers. Using polka dots, patterns and colors, create a way cool fan for a hot summer.

Week 3 - June 19-23rd. Grade 3-4 Age 9

Folks Like Us
Create a folk art style 3-D figure based on characters in Mario Sanchez work. Use wire, plaster cloth and paint to create a standing figure.

Whirligigs boxes
Create a diorama in which a typical Key West street scene is depicted and include moving dancing figures from Mario Sanchez’s work.

Masked Dancers
Sanchez’s Backyard Rhumba Dancers depicts revelers with african masks. Create a mask using paper mache, paint, feathers, faux jewels and beads.

Week 4 - June 26 - June 30th. Grade 4 Age 10

To The Lighthouse, Barbara Mabrity and the Hurricane of 1847
Keeper Barbara Mabrity survived the storm of 1847 and went on to keep the Key West light for 38 years. Create puppets, painted backdrops and collaborate on writing a short puppet play based on her life and experiences as one of the famous lighthouse keepers in the U.S.A.

Seascapes
Look at marine seascapes and create a painting depicting storm clouds, dramatic sunsets and angry seas.

Sailors Valentines
Sailors made these as gifts for their loved ones. Create a 3-D valentine using shells, beach glass, and magazine print material.

Week 5 - July 3-7th. Grade 5, Age 11

Composing with This and That
Explore the art of assemblage. Create a 3-D construction using found objects, fabric, paper, magazine words and images.

Historic Portrait Dolls
Using photo images of prominent Key West citizens, create a soft sculpture art doll using canvas, fabric pastels, textile paints, costume jewelry and beads.

Of the Sea and Mermaids
Examine seascapes created by Key West artists. Create a mixed media piece using canvas, paint and collage techniques to create a surreal mermaid within colorful romantic seascape.

Week 6 - July 10-14th. Grade 5 Age 11/12

Assemblage Matters
Explore the art of assemblage. Create a 3-D construction using found objects, fabric, paper, magazine words and images.

Looking at Collage
using old magazine images, digital photos, printed word and found objects, create a surreal collage masterpiece.

Stanley Sensational Sculptures
Study the sculptures of Stanley Papio. Create a sculpture using found and recyclable objects.

Week 7 - July 17-21st. Grade 6/ Age 12/13

Storytelling Prints
See 1930’s Key West through Mario’s eyes. Create lino block prints based on Mario’s folk paintings.

Sculpture as a Picture
Bas-relief is a method of sculpting in which the surface of a flat piece of wood is carved away. Create a carving using Mario Sanchez’s bas relief sculptures as inspiration.

Light, Glass and Dale Chihuly
Study the work of Dale Chihuly, master glass artist. Create a random organic form that is similar in transparency and color to actual glass.

Week 8 - July 24-28th. Grade 6 Age 12/13

Storytelling Prints
See 1930’s Key west through Mario’s eyes. Create lino block prints based on Mario’s folk paintings.

Stanley’s Iron Mask
Study the sculptures of Stanley Papio. Create a mask out of metal found objects and recyclable materials.

Hidden Amidst Stones

The Key West Art and Historical Society invited students to participate in a special photography project during spring break. Students documented headstones of prominent Key West historical figures of the early 1800’s using pinhole cameras. This project took place during the week of March 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 2006 in the Key West Cemetery and at Fort East Martello Museum, 3501 South Roosevelt Boulevard. Each class is 2 1/2 hours long. Students learned about black and white photography and darkroom techniques including developing and printing photographs. They may even photographed a ghost or two... Registration was open to students age twelve and older. Cost including all supplies was $75 with a 10% discount if you are KWAHS member.
