A Nautical Christmas At The Key West Lighthouse
Holiday ArtCamp for Children

Explore Christmas past in Key West. Learn about the multicultural traditions of the Keys. Create seasonal nautical projects using the lighthouse as inspiration. Create jewelry, decorate paper fans and make a shell ornament, or a fancy nautical knot, play games using signal flags.
Classes will be held from 10 – 12 pm. on December 26, 27, 28, and January 2, 3, 4.
Fees are $80 per week with a 10% discount for KWAHS members. Cost includes all supplies.
Classes limited to 10 students in Grades 1 to 5.

MIX IT UP - DEVELOPING YOUR PAINTING STYLE.
Key West Art and Historical Society Adult Class Series

Every artist has his or her style.
Learn how to see and how to paint what you see - your way.
Caren Ragan, a landscape and portrait artist, is a graduate of Pratt Institute and has taught adult and children’s art classes at the Boca Raton Museum.
Ragan works closely with each student to help develop the student’s painting style and color palette.
Students will explore basic painting techniques, principals of composition, drawing, perspective, form and color composition. Classes are designed to accommodate students of all levels.
Projects will include still life and plein air painting in pastels, acrylic and oil.

Students meet every Saturday starting October 13, 2007 thru December 8, 2007.
Class sessions are 3 hours long from 9:30 to 12:30.
Some classes will take place at the air-conditioned art studio situated at Fort East Martello Museum at 3501 South Roosevelt Boulevard. Students will meet for plein air landscape classes at predetermined locations in Key West. Possible locations include the lighthouse and the botanical gardens.
The 8 week series cost $230. (This works out to less than $10 per hour.) Classes are limited to 12 students.

Kids of Summer Art Show Held August 18, 2007

The Key West Art and Historical Society opened its “Kids of Summer Show” Sunday, displaying the art works of students who attended the society’s Art Camp 2007 at Fort East Martello. “Each year I am surprised at the talent these youngster have,” said Claudia Pennington, CEO of the society. “From paintings to sculptures, it’s truly amazing.” Pennington praised Curator of Education Suzanne Pereira for getting the children to discover their talents during Art Camp. “Suzanne works with each student and I think she is as excited as the student when a work begins to take shape,” Pennington said. IMAGINATION, CREATION AND FUN SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Summer is just around the corner. Interested in summer art activities for your children? Beginning June 4th through July 28th 2007, the Key West Art and Historical Society is offering eight weeks of unique art classes for children age 7 through 14 years. All classes will take place at Fort East Martello Museum, 3501 South Roosevelt Boulevard and The Key West Lighthouse Museum, 938 Whitehead Street. Classes are three hours long, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Upcoming art activities include acrylic painting, watercolor techniques, drawing with pencil and pastels, found object sculpture based on the work of Stanley Papio, folk art based on the work of Mario Sanchez, mosaics using recycled plastic materials and bottle caps, collage, assemblage, mask making and folk jewelry. Our emphasis is on the museums extensive folk art collection of Mario Sanchez and Stanley Papio. This year students will also explore the impressionist painters Van Gogh, Renoir and Manet while learning color mixing, composition and painting techniques.
Weekly classes sessions include all art supplies and cost $150. The ArtCamp 2007 summer session culminates in “The Kids of Summer” art exhibit and party, so sign your kids up for a week of imagination, creation and fun and take home priceless works of art at the end of summer.

Experiment with sponges, combs and frayed sticks to create an unusual folk painting.

Dancing Finger Puppets
Mario Sanchez inspired finger puppets will have you dancing on all ten finger tips.

Can You Resist Drawing?
Wax, oil and water do not get along but try making a painting using all of these materials for surprising results.

Folk Art and Music
Make a folk art percussion instrument using tree limbs, bottle caps, paint and beads.

Make an Impression
Explore mono-printing and mixed media printmaking using puzzle pieces, sponges, Styrofoam cutouts and glue.

Winged Flowers
Make a folk butterfly sculpture using plastic caps, twigs and paint. Learn about butterflies and butterfly gardens as well.

A Moving Still Life
Recreate a still life of flowers using bottle caps- of all things!

The language of Fans
Did you know fans were used to send secret messages? Create your own fan using paint, feathers, beads, jewels and learn the secret language.

Trashy Jewelry
Create a one of a kind necklace using objects often discarded as trash.

Week 4
Grade 2-3

Bold Bright Baron
Create a sculpture using nylon, fabric, wire, gesso and acrylic paint. Celebrate Baron’s fun polka-dot style.

Trashy Jewelry for Trashy People
Bottle caps, found objects, beads, faux jewels help create wacky pins and necklaces.

In The Thick of It
Using found objects such as crushed soda cans, textured rubbings and impasto techniques, create a folk art masterpiece.

A Walk through Gato Village
Recreate Mario Sanchez’s neighborhood using tin, recycled materials and paint.

Make a collage U.S.A flag.
Stanley’s Stupendous Sculptures
Transform metal objects into way cool junk sculptures using Stanley Papio’s art as inspiration.

Paint a print
Explore different techniques in mono-printing to create a one of a kind image.

First Impressions Are Important
Explore techniques in bas relief printmaking. Learn how to pull a print by hand or use a printing press. Incorporate basic drawing skills with color theory and composition to create a unique print.

The Artist’s Eye
Papio inspired found object sculpture uses discarded materials and paint.

The Right to Assemble
Assemblage is 3D collage. Use game boards, tokens, toys, wood letters to make art.

Take a painting and transform it into a sculpture using unusual materials and techniques.

Week 8
Grade 5-6
Time: 9:30 to 12:30
July 23-27

Impressions of the Lighthouse
Meet at the lighthouse to draw on site. Develop a pencil drawing into a pastel painting while learning pastel painting techniques.

The Lighthouse at East Martello
Using your drawing of the lighthouse as a starting point, explore techniques in impasto painting using palette knives and thick paint. This class will meet at East Martello Museum.
