Argentine Tango – an item on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List – began around 1880 along the border of Argentina and Uraguay, and developed in the bordello districts of Buenos Aires, but after it gained popularity in Paris in the early 20th century, this gorgeous dance spread and took the world by storm.
About the Key West World Culture Dance Series
Key West is host to a myriad of cultures, and each one of these cultures is expressed through dance in some form, from Cuban Salsa, Cha-Cha-Cha and the mysterious, sacred orixa dances of the African Yoruba religion, to the sensual Bachata and rowdy Meringue of nearby South American nations, along with the rhythmic Cumbia of Columbia. From the lambada-based dances of Brazil to Caribbean Zouk music, to Junkanoo of the Bahamas, and the American country rhythms of the Southern States, Key West has a thriving dance community. Even Argentine Tango is danced here – having arrived during its golden era – and so are many forms of international ballroom, as well as East Coast Swing, Jitterbug and Charleston that date back to Key West’s time of prohibition. Early settlers from Ireland, Scotland and many parts of Europe also brought their favorite dance styles – that served to connect ex-patriots across continents in congenial social interaction.
Please join us for a series of Dance Workshops in 6 thrilling dance styles from different cultures. Each Workshop is two hours long, and will be taught by a highly regarded teacher with a thorough knowledge of both the dance and its history.
